Altec badged instead of IPC, but definitely 515's, the original paper surround.
GPA can only make 515B's out of them, but every once in awhile an original 515 recone kit will surface on E-bay for usually a pretty penny. However, there's no way to guarantee the condition or quality of the materials at this point...
BTW, you've really been bitten by the old Altec bug, huh?
Did I mention I have an extra VIT?!?!!???....:D

Re: Id older Altec 15 inch speaker
Hi AB,
As I remember there IS a serial number on the back side of the cone. Right now they are in my Valencias (846B). I don't remember the numbers though. I was just curious because there was no letter after the 416 8 stamped in the rear of the driver. They are from 1975 so I presume they are pretty early in the 416 series. I'm kind of new at this. I'm learning every day. I love this forum. It has brought me back to a place I have missed for many years. Most of the time the discussions are WAY over my head, but as I said I'm learning.
As I said earlier, my Val's are completely original. I was thinking of upgrading the 806 drivers to 902's. Also changing the XO's. Any suggestions on the XO's?
Thanks...

About midway.
416A dates from 1964
416C ended in 1984
Altec
Although I believe a few might have been made later but not many.
Re: Id older Altec 15 inch speaker
Thanks OG,
It would appear I can replace the 806's in my Vals with the 902's and keep the N800 XO's. This seem a good mod. Too bad my 416A's aren't B's. Oh well...

Hi Marv, You said you bought your Val's in 1975 correct ??? Well that was the last year for the 416-A's I think.I know Altec started putting the 416-8B in the new Model 19's the first year for the 19 was 1976.So if you bought your Valencias in 1975 you have a very late model 416-8A. :)
Re: Id older Altec 15 inch speaker
416-8B was available in late fall of '74. Late model 846B/U's could have left the factory with either woofer, i've seen them both ways and it's not unusual to encounter pairs with mismatched woofers from that late vintage.

Now about that 1400 series RCA woofer the 515 is sitting on... yum!
Worked out a trade for the RCA speaker :2thumbsup: ,what should the field coil impeadance read in ohms ,from what i could learn it takes about 115 volts DC for the field coil .
